What makes this a whole food vitamin D?
Every nutrient in the bottle starts as food rather than a compound isolated in a lab. The D3 comes from wild lichen, the K2 fermented from non-GMO chickpeas, and the rest of the formula is beef liver, horseradish tree leaf, marine algae, rosemary, coconut and black pepper. We believe nutrients should arrive with the cofactors they naturally come with in food, rather than on their own to better support utilization in the body.
Where does the vitamin D3 come from?
Wild-harvested lichen. Lichen is one of the few natural organisms that makes vitamin D3 from sunlight, which is the same biological process your own skin uses.
Is vitamin D3 from lichen as good as vitamin D3 from lanolin?
They're both technically cholecalciferol, but they don't come from the same place. Lanolin D3 starts as grease scraped from sheep's wool, then goes through industrial solvent extraction and chemical conversion to get to a usable vitamin. Lichen D3 skips all of that: lichen is one of the only organisms on earth that makes D3 directly from sunlight, the same way your own skin does. No wool grease, no synthetic conversion step, just a plant-based organism doing what it's always done.
What is the difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3?
D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plant and fungal sources like irradiated yeast. D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form your skin makes in sunlight and it's what's in this bottle. Research shows D3 raises and sustains blood levels more effectively than D2, which is why our supplement uses it.
Why is there vitamin K2 in a vitamin D supplement?
Vitamin D helps your body take up calcium, and K2 is included to support normal calcium metabolism in the body.* Hence why this formula pairs so well with our Whole Food Calcium. The K2 here is MenaQ7® menaquinone-7, produced by fermenting non-GMO chickpeas.
Why does a vitamin D supplement contain beef liver?
Desiccated beef liver is a whole-food source of naturally occurring vitamin A, specifically retinol, the active form your body can use directly.* Vitamin D doesn't work alone: its receptor has to pair with a partner receptor that vitamin A activates before your cells can actually respond to it. Without enough usable vitamin A, vitamin D's effects fall short even when blood levels look fine. Liver provides that vitamin A in the same active form your body would make from an animal source, not the beta-carotene form most people convert poorly.
Is this vitamin D vegan or vegetarian?
No, it is neither. The vitamin D3 itself is plant-sourced from wild lichen, but this formula also contains desiccated beef liver, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Why is there coconut in it?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it is absorbed alongside dietary fat. Coconut flesh oil powder is a stable, food-based source of fat to help with absorption. It also means this formula contains tree nuts.
