What makes this a whole food calcium?
Every nutrient in the bottle starts as food rather than a synthetic compound isolated in a lab. Our formula is built mainly on eggshells and marine algae, whole food sources of calcium that naturally contain supporting minerals like magnesium. Most calcium supplements start as limestone which then has to be heavily processed into calcium carbonate.
Where does the calcium come from?
Upcycled eggshells and a red marine algae that draws minerals out of seawater and builds them into its own skeleton as it grows. Alongside them is horseradish tree leaf, for extra trace minerals and phytonutrients.
Is eggshell calcium better than calcium carbonate?
Chemically, eggshell calcium is calcium carbonate, but the difference is in the source and nutrient matrix. Eggshell arrives as a food, and we formulate it with natural supporting nutrients. Most calcium carbonates on the market are ultra processed limestone with no supporting nutrients.
Is eggshell calcium safe to take?
Yes. The eggshell used here is eggshell calcium powder, a food-grade ingredient made for supplement use, not something scraped from a kitchen bin. Every batch is tested for microbial safety and heavy metals at an independent third-party facility. As with any supplement, check with your healthcare provider before use if you're pregnant, nursing, or on medication.
Does this contain dairy?
No. This formula contains eggshell which is not dairy.
Is it suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
It is suitable for most vegetarians but not for vegans, because the calcium comes partly from eggshell. There is no meat in the formula.
Why is there horseradish tree leaf in a calcium supplement?
Horseradish tree leaf is a natural source of plant phytonutrients, magnesium and trace minerals, all of which are commonly found in calcium-rich whole foods.* It is the same leaf that appears in our whole food vitamin D formula, included as a whole ground leaf rather than an extract.
Taking it
Should I take calcium with food?
Yes. The label's suggested use is two capsules twice daily with food. However, many people take it away from food with no issues.
Can I take the whole day's amount at once?
Yes but we suggest taking two capsules in the AM and two capsules in the PM for better absorption.
Do I need vitamin D to absorb calcium?
Vitamin D helps your body take up calcium, which is why the two are so often taken together. Whole Food Vitamin D also contains K2, included to support normal calcium metabolism in the body.* Many people prefer our discounted bundle for this reason.
